Jeremy Moyer: A Discovery of Chinese Folk Tunes (CD Review)

Who would have ever thought that a UW honours degree in French would eventually lead to self-producing a CD of Chinese folk music? Jeremy Moyer has done just that. A Discovery of Chinese Folk Tunes may be the most interesting release from a local artist that this region has ever seen.

The CD is essentially an anthology of music from different regions of China. Moyer has performed on authentic Chinese instruments such as the coconut shell fiddle and the pipa lute.

The ten songs which are featured on the CD hold roots in a spectrum of styles and Chinese geographical contexts. The single distinguishing characteristic of the CD is that each track is completely unique in its array of sounds, themes and moods.

For example, the second track, "Madly in Love," is a folk opera piece from South China which was arranged for fiddle, wood blocks, gongs and drum.

While the seventh featured track, "Three Stanzas from Yang-Guan," a Tang Dynasty ceremonial piece, is definitely calmer and more solemn than other tracks.

A Discovery of Chinese Folk Tunes is a "must have" for any CD collection. It is destined to appeal to music connoisseurs of all types. Furthermore, Moyer's talent displayed on the CD can hardly be overlooked.
